Niv’s Top Films and TV shows of 2014

To kick start the Awkward Alien blog I thought it would be fun to list my top 5 movies and TV shows of 2014.

so without further ado, here are my top 5 films:

  1. Gone Girl: Despite being one of the most divisive films this year, it was my favourite (I’ve seen it twice!). David Fincher directing the brilliant script by Gillian Flynn. It’s dark, funny, eerie, twisted, surprising and intense. Everything I love in a film. To top everything off Trent Raznor and Atticus Ross create an amazing score. Was this film feminist or anti-feminist? I think it was both and neither.
  2. Interstellar: This film was beautiful and epic yet it was heartfelt. It put it’s characters first and that’s what made it so successful to me (as well as the genius music by Hans Zimmer. I can’t stop listening to it.). My only problem (and I think many people agree) was the ending. It didn’t ruin the movie for me, but it’s why it’s this film landed (pun intended) in 2nd place.
  3. Guardians of the Galaxy: I loved James Gunn’s earlier works Super and Slither, so I was very excited to see what he can do with a large budget and I was not disappointed. It’s goofy, cool, beautiful and everything I was hopping for.
  4. The Grand Budapest Hotel: Moonrise Kingdom is probably one of my favourite films of all time and I think Wes Anderson topped himself this time.
  5. Zero Motivation: This film was a big hit in Israel for a reason. The film is clever and fun with some very dark moments. It gives you a taste of how useless bureaucracy and how boring life in the army can be.
Zero Motivation

A few films I missed this year: Boyhood, Snowpiercer, Birdman.

And a couple of movies I’m looking for in 2015: Avengers 2, Jupiter Ascending, Terminator: Genisys.

Top 5 TV shows:

  1. Orphan Black: Despite being a little disappointing, season 2 of Orphan Black was great and weird and wonderful television. Tatiana Maslany was amazing and she deserves all the awards, but the rest of the cast was awesome too and I just can’t wait for this show to come back!
  2. Game of Thrones: This season was probably the most eventful yet and I just love how this show keeps me guessing. My favourite scene was the fight between Brienne and The Hound, because you didn’t want either of them to die, and that’s how powerful this show is.
  3. Arrow: This show had the best year. The later half of season 2 was just delicious and while the first half of season 3 may have been bumpy, it was brave and interesting and that last episode just left me with my mouth wide open. And don’t forget about the crossovers with The Flash!
  4. Broad City: The reason why I stopped watching Girls was because of how much I hated the characters, mostly the main character. Broad City reminded me a lot of Girls, but it’s more vulgar… yet charming. These ladies are goofy and unapologetic. This is how you write an empowering show.
  5. The Affair: The name and the topic of the show might put you off, I know I was, but this show is strong and original on every front. The structure of the show (his side, her side) is strange in an interesting way. The show does an excellent job of slowly building up the romance and it’s very interesting to see how it deals with it. I also have to praise the two leads who are just brilliant on every level.
